The more nasty the Brexit debate has become the clearer it gets: We are about to dangerously slide back into the old ditches between Ireland and Britain – and the border between the North and the South of Ireland has become the big issue (again). The German TV station Phönix Plus therefore felt a need to explain more substantially for a non English or Irish audience the history and significance of what is at stake on the Irish island. The Phönix programme „The Irish dilemma“ (in German), first shown on 7 February 2019, will be broadcasted repeatedly until the end of March. In it Corinna Hauswedell who has been researching Northern Ireland for the last twenty years argues that it is the opposite nature of the peace agreement and the Brexit undertaking, the one trying to be inclusive and cooperative, the other aiming at separation and discrimination, which renders them incompatible and makes an acceptable solution seemingly impossible. Brexit fundamentally challenges all three Strands of the Belfast Agreement, and denies democracy to a relevant number of UK (and still EU) citizens.
