Between 17 October and 1 November 2019 Corinna Hauswedell spent again two weeks teaching as a guest lecturer (‘flying faculty’) at the Deutsch-Kasachische Universität (Kazakh-German University) in Almaty. As in 2018, this happened on the invitation of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the course given at the Masters Educational Programme for Regional Studies in Central Asia was titled Peacebuilding – History and Practice Today and comprised three parts: (1) genesis and criticism of the concept of peacebuilding, its academic background and politico-practical implementation at UN level; (2) case studies such as the OSCE as a multilateral context, and the peace process in Northern Ireland as a Western European example endangered by the recent development of Brexit; (3) validity of the concept vis-a-vis a rapidly changing world. Among the topics discussed were the relevance of intercultural dialogue / mediation, and the specific regional resources for cooperation in Central Asia. The students presented case studies such as border management with Afghanistan, the frozen conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, and the Osh-Crisis in Kyrgyzstan. The cooperation will be continued in 2020.
